Shelley City Background
John F. Shelley moved to the area in 1892 with plans to build a general store. Due to the lack of local resources, and the fact that the nearest town was some distance away, he requested that the railroad make a special stop to unload supplies. As the area grew in population, the railroad added a spur in the area, which they named Shelley. Though the plan was to name the town Shelco, because the Railroad already referred to it as the Shelley Spur, the name Shelley is what stuck. Shelley was established as a town in 1904.
